How Does One Properly Maintain a Deck?
Maintenance Tips From Our Professional Deck Builder
If you have already committed to installing a deck, then you will know that this is an investment for your home. Just the same as the rest of your home, it too needs regular maintenance and cleaning in order for it to last for years to come. If your deck is made from composite materials, then it does not need as much maintenance as wooden decks. However, it too will need to be cleaned. We at [cn] want you to get the most from your investment! So, follow a few basic tips provided by our professional deck builder, to extend the life and safety of your deck.
Deep cleaning annually
We all know that Spring cleaning happens once a year, and this should also include your deck. This will need deep cleaning at least once a year, plus, the reapplication of a protective sealant in order to protect the wood. This must be done when the weather is 60 to 70 degrees.
There are numerous deep cleaning solutions for decks on the market today, and most can also kill bacteria and mold. A high-powered washer can work wonders on decks, however, you need to be careful not to overdo it. As even though it saves on time and labor, it can punch holes in the wood when not used properly. However, if you do not have one of these, then a standard garden hose that has a fire hose attachment will also work.
Protecting your shrubbery
Before you even consider using a power washer, make sure you protect the plants surrounding your deck! As cleaners and sealant products will have harmful chemicals in them. To prevent this, make sure you cover your plants with plastic or a tarp and be sure to keep it loose enough so the air still circulates.
Using the correct products
Before you use any sealant or cleaner on your deck, do some research. You cannot use any product, for example, chlorine bleach should never be used. This is more important on wooden decks. As bleach will strip the wood of color and damage the cellular structure.
